Benghazi: Smoking Gun, or All Smoke?

Busy times, both at work and at home, have given me little time to prepare something for the podcast, so I’m going to throw a blog post out here. If you have any ideas for what you’d like me to cover, comment on this post, write me a considerthis@ctpodcasting.com, or call me at 267-CALL-CT-0 (267-225-5280).

What about Benghazi? (ABC News)

What about Benghazi? (ABC News)

When the latest memo to come out of the Benghazi investigation came out…

OK, let me back up. Actually, the memo was never given to the Congressional investigation. It took a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by Judicial Watch for this memo to come out. So for starters, it really looks like the administration did not want this out in public.

The thrust of the message was clear: Protect Obama’s image (and re-election efforts) at all costs; American interests and the American public’s right to know be damned. It contained four bullet points:

–”To convey that the United States is doing everything that we can to protect our people and facilities abroad;

–”To underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy;

–”To show that we will be resolute in bringing people who harm Americans to justice, and standing steadfast through these protests;

–”To reinforce the President and Administration’s strength and steadiness in dealing with difficult challenges.”

Remember, this all happened in the heat of the President’s re-election campaign. As to the bullet points, we now know that the US was not doing everything it could to protect the consulate, the protest were not rotted in an Internet video (and the administration knew that almost immediately after the incident), we did not bring anyone to justice (not even now, 20 months after the incident), which goes to show that the President and the Administration do not have strength and steadiness in dealing with difficult challenges.

But the kiester-covering was in full swing and scapegoats were worth their weight in gold.

In his congressional testimony, former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell said that then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice is the one who linked the video to the Benghazi attacks but that the video was not part of the CIA analysis. In other words, the administration made it up out of whole cloth to deflect blame for its policy failures in relaxing the war on terror…

Indeed, the day after the event:

An email on Sept. 12, 2012, to Rice from Payton Knopf, deputy spokesman at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, confirmed the attacks were “planned in advance” and “complex,” not spontaneous in reaction to a video.

Poor Jay Carney had the unenviable job of trying to deny that these memos had anything to do with Benghazi, even though they were provided due to a FOIA request about…Benghazi.

The fact that they, indeed, speak to the Benghazi issues specifically, but the administration hung on to these memos and did not give them to Darrell Issa and the committee, shows just how revealing they are.

But only now are the mainstream media noticing this story. The Benghazi hearings have been pitifully covered. The idea that this has been a “Fox News story” (as though they made it up) only came because they gave it the coverage it deserved, while the rest of the media sat on its collective hands. Now, even ABC news reporters found themselves amazed at the stonewalling and dissembling.

But even with that, ABC has been very reluctant to report on it. Even the President has called out Fox on this — no other network — so you know it’s been getting short shrift elsewhere. And at other networks, without coming out directly and saying it, the news executives suddenly wouldn’t find time to report on it.

Yes, the daily interviews from the committee can be yawners, and it’s not always breaking news. That much is true. But it’s also true that the latest revelations are news, and even that is getting reported primarily by Fox.

Oh, and MSNBC? Yeah, never mind about them. If it doesn’t have a link to Chris Christie and “Bridgegate” (where nobody died), they don’t care much about it.

This is important. If you news outlet isn’t covering it, you may need to switch sources.

A fair and balanced hearing?

A fair and balanced hearing?

It’s that time once again, to take 10 minutes (or less) out of your day to get your recommended dose of conservative commentary.

Hearkening back to my first episode ever, the Columbia Journalism Review tackled the subject of paid liberal analysts at Fox News vs. the lack of dissenting opinion at MSNBC. Once again, the question is, “Who will give you a fair hearing, or any hearing at all?” The answer really should not surprise you, and should also be good news if you want to get your voice heard on this particular show.

The President described recent budgets (well, recent spending, since Democrats have been very reluctant to pass actual budgets) with a word that, to paraphrase Inigo Montoya, doesn’t mean what he thinks it means.

And finally, can the President get a little “rspect”? Ask Dan Quayle.

Some students at the University of Minnesota do not like the fact that, when descriptions of the suspects of crime on campus are made public, the race of the student is included. But is reporting it worth the risk?

The percentage of Americans no longer looking for work is the highest it’s been in almost 40 years. Do we really want to be pushing people out the door because ObamaCare gives them  an incentive to quit? Do we really want to tear out the incentive to work from society?

When the government is caught in a gross abuse of power, the nation’s media have been all over the story; Watergate, Iran-Contra. But somehow this fire has been lost when it happens these days.

Guns vs homicides

Guns vs homicides

President Obama gave something of an apology in November for his promise that if you liked your health care plan or doctor, you could keep them, period. Turns out what he meant was that if he liked them, you could keep them. And he turned out to be very difficult to please.

But he’s not the only one who was going around making that promise.

“More guns, more violence”, so goes the mantra that, apparently, many liberal politicians and their voters keep chanting. However, there were some maps made by the United Nations office on Drugs and Crime that tend to set this mantra on its ear.

Now that same-sex marriage has been accepted by some states, it’s no longer a draw for the evening news, so ABC News in America has decided to move on to the next big thing; open marriage. This is what passes for “news” in the 21st century; one-sided advocacy journalism.

Can a state government decide what law it will and will not uphold? In Pennsylvania, the state Attorney General has promoted herself to state Supreme Court Justice by refusing to defend a state law’s constitutionality because of her own personal opinion of the law. So then, do we need to keep two sets of laws for the state; one with a Democrat as the AG and one when it’s a Republican? When the US Supreme Court said that the people of California didn’t have standing to try to keep their own constitutional amendment in force, they opened the door to this.

The Left’s “Birthers”: 26% of Obama voters think the Tea Party is a larger terror threat than radical Muslims. Yes, really.

The trial of George Zimmerman riveted the nation’s media attention for weeks, which is understandable when the charges are 4 counts of 1st degree murder and 1 count of 3rd degree murder. OK, I’m playing with you there. It was just 1 count of 2nd degree murder that was on the line for George Zimmerman. Those other charges were against Kermit Gosnell, the abortion doctor, who was ultimately convicted of 3 of the 4 murder 1 counts, and the murder 3 count was reduced to involuntary manslaughter. So how did the coverage compare?

And all the while, in that shining beacon of gun-control, Chicago, hundreds of people, many of them Trayvon Martin’s age and race, are shot dead every year. They don’t get media coverage, or marches, or Attorney General Eric Holder’s attention, or a moment of silence at a Beyonce concert.

How could conservative groups be targeted for unfair treatment at the Environmental Protection Agency? I couldn’t quite understand that when I first heard of it, but indeed the EPA was able to do just that.

Liberals have been lifted by the news that groups with the words “progressive” or “occupy” were also targeted at the IRS. However, the level of scrutiny they received was an order of magnitude easier than it was for conservative groups. Listen in to see…er…hear the difference.

With all the scandals going on these days, the cable news networks have seen some changes in their viewership numbers. But for one network, that’s not good news. Care to guess which one?

Would you support a baker who refused to bake a cake with a Swastika on it celebrating a pair of loving neo-Nazis who were getting married? Would the ACLU come down on the side of the baker, or the couple? Now, listen as I make one small change to the situation and see if all of a sudden, things change drastically.

Would you believe that there is media bias in how the same-sex marriage issue is portrayed and reported? Well, a Pew Research study proves it, and the NY Times reports it as actual news. (Which it is, but it may really be news to NY Times readers.)

George W. Bush, far from being the anti-science neanderthal he was portrayed as, believed science could research its way out of the ethical dilemma of using already-frozen embryonic cells as a source for stem cells. Now we’re producing embryonic cells from skin.

The bombing of the Boston Marathon started a number of things; a terrorism investigation, increased security all over the country, and the media’s attempt to, again, blame the Right for domestic terrorism. Folks, please, let’s take care of the wounded and bury our dead before breaking out the knee-jerk reactions, OK? It seems like after every single act like this, the media just has to have a race to see who can blame conservatives first.

There’s a murder trial going on in Pennsylvania. A doctor was arrested in 2011 for killing 8 people, and the trial has been going on since March 18th. Accusations of beheadings, special treatment for whites, severed feet in jars, 15-year-olds administering anesthesia, unsanitary clinic conditions that spread STDs to unsuspecting women, and multiple state agencies made aware of this but who chose to ignore what was going on. It wasn’t on the front page of your newspaper, or of the national TV news, because it paints abortion in a bad light, and Kermit Gosnell as the example of doing back-alley abortions in an approved clinic.

To bail out banks in Cyprus (who had loaned a lot to Greece, hence the need for a bailout), the Eurozone suggested confiscating money in those banks to partially pay the banks. Sweet deal if you’re a banker, panic-inducing if you’re not. Socialism is destroying Europe.

The Democrats in the Senate managed, after 4 long years, to produce something it seemed they’d forgotten about; a budget! It is, of course, more of the same taxing and spending (and spending more than they’re taxing). And it remains to be seen if they’ll even vote for their own budget, since they unanimously voted against Obama’s budget last year.

And Paul Thacker of the Slate website lets Slate readers in on the worst-kept secret evah; the media has a liberal bias! Who knew! (No, I didn’t mean for a show of hands. That was rhetorical.)

The New York Times seems to have woken up from its 4-year slumber and realized that the Barack Obama is essentially pushing the same defense policies as Bush. Truly a shocker (to those who have not been paying attention.) Hey Times. Obama’s been making the same arguments he criticized for more than just last week. But I guess now that he’s been reelected, you’re free to notice it now.

In other news that the media has ignored, it was recently discovered that the Times and the Washington Post kept secret the fact that the US has a drone base in Saudi Arabia. The papers didn’t touch the story until the details had leaked out elsewhere. I compare that to how the Times dealt with secrets during the Bush administration. What a difference an administration makes!

And once again we play “Name That Quote”! This time, it’s a quote about ObamaCare(tm) that the speaker says will require more and more taxes, and even >gasp< Death Panels! No, it’s not Sarah Palin. See if you can guess who it is before I spill the beans.
