Gun Control Archives

The trends are clear

So why is the economy doing so well? Is that Obama’s doing or can Trump take some credit? Is this a question better left to the professionals? Well, you’re in luck, because a professional came out and demonstrated that, for various indicators of a good economy, things are looking very good. But when they started to look good is very important.

And a young man grew up recently. He understood that the way to persuade is not yelling gotcha’ questions at a political figure, but to make better arguments. We don’t agree on his main issue of gun control, but at least he’s going to let his ideas be heard in more measured tones so that he can get people to consider this.

Episode 227: Studies You May Not Have Heard About

Hiding from the facts

This time out, I’m covering 2 studies, the results of which you probably have not heard about.

First of all, we keep hearing about how school shootings are an epidemic these days. But when NPR tried to confirm government statistics…they couldn’t.

A Brown university professor tried to figure out how much of the current wave of transgenderism was based on external rather than internal influences (that is, how much of it could be attributed to it being a ‘fad’). His results upset some people, so what did the school (that bastion of free speech and facts) do with the study? Listen in.

Who’s in charge here?

The state of Florida stopped doing background checks for gun permits for a whole year. Your government at work…or not. Listen to find out why they didn’t, and what one of the ramifications may have been.

Kids in Connecticut are breaking track records, but not everyone’s happy about that. Listen to find out why, and what they’re doing about it.

Do we let our 4-year-olds decide on their bedtime, or make even bigger decisions about their upbringing? If a new movie out of Hollywood is to be believed, maybe we should let them make life-altering decisions…or not.

Is the IRS really paying for this?

The IRS is paying a penalty for targeting conservatives. Except that it’s a rather small amount. And nobody got fined, fired, or jailed for it. And you, the taxpayer will be footing the bill. And the damage was already done. But hey, they are paying!

Deerfield, Illinois is determines to learn the exact wrong lesson from Kennesaw, Georgia. Whereas Kennesaw required homeowners to own a gun, Deerfield is banning them. Kennesaw saw their crime rates drop in subsequent years. I wonder what will happen in Deerfield.

What would be next after strict gun control if it were enacted here? Knife control? Don’t laugh. That’s exactly what’s happening in London.

Challenging Opinions with William Campbell

You’ve heard the arguments many times; pro- and anti-gun, or pro- and anti-immigration. You’ve seen the analogies and heard all the various statistics bandied about.

But have you noticed that both sides tend to play a bit fast and loose with what arguments and statistics are used or emphasized? William Campbell of one of my favorite podcasts, Challenging Opinions, laid out the case that both sides do it, and how it is done. When I heard it, I just had to include it here. I don’t entire agree with some of his individual points, but the commentary in general really hit me, so I thought that you, too, would like to consider this.

A hero you won’t hear about on TV

On the school shooting front, I have good news! An armed School Resource Officer stopped a school shooting recently. But of course, you won’t hear weeks of coverage of it on the liberal news networks. They won’t have a town hall about it. They’d rather blame law abiding citizens than praise a hero who’s success doesn’t fit their narrative.

However, I have bad news on the women’s safety front. A battered women’s shelter turned away a man with a history of violent behavior. But he’s filed a complaint of discrimination because he says he’s a ‘she’, in spite of not having taken any steps legally or physically. This is the abuse we warned you about. This complaint might not succeed, but the foot is in the door.

Episode 207: Bell’s Crusade

Who is Bell?

This is a story about Bell and how she made a difference in this world. She had a rough start, and she had a temper, but she directed that energy into fighting against discrimination and injustice. But who is she? Has she done something extraordinary that you might have heard about?

If anyone tries to tell you – whenever, wherever, and whoever you are – that you can’t make a difference because of the time you live in, the place you live in, or the hurdles you have to get over because of who you are, just consider this.

Terrorist?

The church shooting in Texas; was it terrorism, what failed, and where we go from here. That’s the topic this episode. We keep coming to these questions after mass shootings, but this particular one has some stark answers.

Gun homicides are down, but mass shootings seem worse

In the wake of another mass shooting, the country is again looking at itself and deciding what needs to be done. Can a law be passed that would have prevented this? Should we get more seriously restrictive of gun ownership, or, as some high profile people have suggested, repeal and replace the Second Amendment?

I’ll look at some of the pat explanations being offered, and I’ll show how none of the really fit this situation.

Or maybe there’s a moral component to this that so many people would rather ignore. The gun homicide rate has been falling since 1993, but mass shootings seem to be on the rise. Perhaps it’s not a matter for Congress, because they can’t pass a law against the existence of evil. Where do we turn?

Episode 180: A Tour of Chicago

Let’s take a tour of Chicago (if you dare)

On this episode, we’ll be taking a tour of Chicago, and Illinois in general, showing you some of the sights. These include:

  • Shootings in the city despite (or because of) strict gun control laws.
  • The thousands fleeing the state due to high taxes (and how one of Illinois’ neighbors solved that same problem).
  • A Democrat-controlled General Assembly that won’t pass a budget (and the results of that).
  • The Chicago Public School system, that is getting a bail-out as a reward for financial mismanagement.

A better look at the “Blue State Model” of governing you’re not likely to find anywhere else. Is it a progressive’s paradise? Sadly, yes.
