Smaller Government Archives

It’s the one-year anniversary of Consider This! Just seems like yesterday it was getting off the ground. They grow up so fast. And since it’s a special occasion, I hope you won’t mind that my usual 10-minute-or-less podcast nearly hit 13 minutes!

Edward Snowden, via Glenn Greenwald, brought a few things about the US government to the attention of the world. I’m of two minds on these revelations, and I’ll explain both those “minds”.

But this reveals much more about some of the more foundational ideas about government. Conservatives have been beating the “smaller government” drum for a very long time, and this shows one of the problems big government brings. It also goes to the issue of trust. If you don’t trust your government (and Lord Acton may suggest that you shouldn’t), why do we keep giving it more and more power? What kind of people and government does our Constitution work best for? John Adams has an idea about that.

The root of the issue with IRS scandal is the size of government. Yes, this happens under any administration, because the government is too big, and things can go on without the proper people being aware of it. Yes, man is sinful and all Presidents fail in this respect, but a big government puts massive power, especially the power to destroy, in the hands of people who, just like you and me, are tempted by power. This is not a failure of the system; this is the system, and it’s out of control. The solution is not more money for a bigger IRS as some officials are asking for. The solution is smaller government.

I asked for examples of what I call “drive-by graphics” in the last episode. These are pictures that attempt a quick rebuttal of political or social issues that completely miss the point. They argue against something folks aren’t arguing for. Those that note that Republicans didn’t get as outraged with the many deaths at embassy attacks under Bush as they are under Obama was my example of that. That’s not the issue. Well, I have another example of a drive-by graphic, this time by conservatives.

I noticed that I’ve got another user review on iTunes! Thanks so much, “Circlemage”! You, too, can rate the show (1-5 stars) and, if you want, you can also leave a review. Gets my show higher up in the rankings, and can create a larger listener base for feedback. (Did I mention I love feedback?)
